THE GIGA IMMUNOHISTOLOGY PLATFORM : HOW CAN
WE WORK TOGETHER ?
General presentation of the platform and exemples of applica-
tions and collaboration with the Bioinformatic platform.

GIGA COLLABORATES WITH NEW-ZEALAND
During the princely mission in Australia and New Zealand, a
partnership agreement was concluded between the GIGA-
Cardiovascular Sciences and the Department of Mechanical
Engineering of the Canterbury University (Christchurch).
DEC
IMCYSE AT THE LABHOTEL
Imcyse, a biomedical start-up have moved in in our labhotel. This
start-up actually counts 6 people and have many collaboration
with our center.
COMMUNICATION
The GIGA shares information on its website, but also on
Facebook (www.facebook.com/GIGAresearch) and Twitter
(www.twitter.com/GIGA_ULg). More than 100 tweets were
posted in 2012.
The GIGA is also particularly keen to vulgarize the work rea-
lized in its laboratories, in order to make science accessible to
everyone. Articles of scientifc vulgarization are also regularly
posted on the website «Réfexions» (8 in 2012). Moreover, many
videos were realized and are available on the GIGA website
or on the Ulg webTV (www.giga.ulg.ac.be/videos and www.
webtv.ulg.ac.be) .
MAY 4th
GIGA-DAY
The GIGA-Day was organized by the GIGA-Infection, Immunity
and Infammation unit with Ken Ishii (University of Osaka, Japan) and
Veerle Somers (University of Hasselt, Belgium) as invited speakers.
MAY 5th
GIGA OPEN DAY
GIGA opened its doors last in the framework
of the «Europe week-end». Grownups and
kids had the opportunity to discover the
world of scientifc research with conference,
visits and workshops.
MAY 15th
DELRUELLE PRIZE
The Janine and Jacques Delruelle prize (12 500 €) goes to Brigitte
Malgrange and Laurent Nguyen (GIGA-Neurosciences) for their
project «unravelling the roles of lysine acetylation in neural deve-
lopment».
JUN 22nd
GIGA-CANCER DAY
As every year, a special day was organized by the GIGA-Cancer
unit with presentations, talks and posters.
SEPT
CREATION OF THE GIGA-CARDIOVASCULAR SCIENCES
UNIT
It represents a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, specialists in
cardiology, experts in imaging, cardiovascular surgeons, scientists,
molecular and cell biologists, physicists and engineers who work
collaboratively in the framework of a translational, “bench to bed-
side” approach with the ultimate goal of translating the developed
knowledge into patient benefts. In this Unit, emphasis is placed on
close collaboration between basic and clinical researchers, and on
creating a network of relations with internationally recognized
research Centers.

NEW PLATFORMS
A new platform is created : GIGA-Viral Vectors
JAN 27th
CHARCOT FUNDATION GRANT
Rachelle Franzen and Linda Chaballe have won a grant from
the Charcot Fundation, which funds research against mul-
tiple sclerosis. Rachelle and Linda work on the identifcation
of the molecular mechanisms leading to the appearance of
the multiple sclerosis disease. They particularly study the
role of a molecule, named «elongator», that could be at the
origin of the process of demyelinization of the nervous
fbers in the spinal cord and the brain.
FEB 16th
WHAT’S NEW AT THE GIGA IMAGING AND FLOW
CYTOMETRY PLATFORM ?
Presentation about the services and equipments available
at the Imaging and Flow Cytometry platform and informa-
tion about the high-content screening.
MAY 1st
NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Jacques Boniver, former chairman of the Board, has retired.
Since the 1st of May, Jean-Michel Foidart has succeeded
him in this function.
