Biobank
The access to human specimen is the
cornerstone of the biomedical, medical
and pharmaceutical research. Further-
more, due to the evolution of medi-
cine, the needs for biospecimens keep
growing. The mechanisms to collect,
process, store and handle samples in
appropriate ethical, technical and logis-
tical conditions are now well identifed.
The «Biothèque Universitaire de liège»
(BUL) results from a partnership between
the Academic Hospital (CHU) and ULg
(GIGA). It works following strictly the
rules imposed by current legislation
and the recommendations of the Ethics
Committee of the CHU. In addition, the
operation of the BUL has been appro-
ved by the Ethics Committee of the
Faculty of Medicine, University of Liège.
Diferent types of tumor samples are
available (breast, colon, lymph nodes,
brain, liver, kidney...). The BUL is only
dedicated to scientifc research and
not intended for human application. The
samples collected arise from residual
material from human tissues provided in
the context of an exploration or clinical
follow-up.

Immunohistology
Processing tissues to get high quality sections, otpimizing the immunohistochemical detection of antigens
that could be weakly expressed can be a long and sometimes difcult process. The platform is equipped
wth a DISCIOVERY XT System (Ventana, Roche) that allows automation of slide processsing for immu-
nostaining. It assures reproductibility of immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization. Many protocols
such as the immunodetection of BDCA, FoxPp3 or EFGR, have been optimized for the DISCOVERY XT.
Working in close collaboration with the Biobank, the platform is also able to produce Tissue Micrarrays of
healthy or pathologial tissues. Finally, the slides can be scanned directly by the platform’s staf for storage
and computer analysis.
