GIGA - Annual report 2021

GIGA 2021 Annual Report 81 CIRM We have collaborated with Gilles Degotte (CIRM, Uliège) who works on the development of new drugs. The zebrafish was used as a successful model for screening the toxicity of natural antiplasmodial compounds. As part of the development of new drug candidates for the treatment of malaria inspired by natural polyphenols, the use of Danio rerio embryos allowed to explore the toxic potential of some specific compounds with regard to healthy cells. After a first in vitro evaluation on different monolayer cell lines (venous endothelial cells and red blood cells), zebrafish embryos showed in a robust way the absence of major toxicities in an entire model organism. These results (Degotte et al, submitted) highlighted the selectivity of action of some compounds against Plasmodium falciparum as well as their overall safety.
