If needed, experiments can be performedin biosafety level 1, 2 or 3. Prior any experiment, the experimental protocol has to be approved by the the institutional animal ethics commission. Additionally, quality procedures have been implemented and the department which is frequently audited by external companies works under ISO 17205- like conditions. For this, standard operating procedures are available as well as a traceability system. The Animal Facility follows the guidelines of the Belgian legislation regarding mandatory training of people involved on the animals (animal caretakers, technicians and researchers). The SPF Animal Facility houses and manages approximately 240 murine lines, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds. In addition to this basic work, the animal house coordinates the import and export of lines, the sanitary follow-up of the animals, as well as the sanitization, cryopreservation and revitalization of lines. For this purpose, a new quarantine and embryo handling facility has been created. Three new binoculars have been purchased to perform these manipulations.
