platforms 88 platforms 89 Animal Facility Platform The GIGA animal faclility consists of a single structure, approved under a single accreditation label (“Animalerie Centrale de l’Université”) by the Public Service. It is divided into three coordinated and interdependent structures (human resources, services, animals), used both for research and teaching activities. These 3 structures (a conventional facility, an SOPF facility and a third one dedicated to zebrafish) are each housed in a specific building. The 3 facilities offer a wide range of services, both internal and external, such as housing, breeding management, cryopreservation, rederivation, and revitalization. They also provide imaging, surgery, and recording of experimental behavior, all while carefully monitoring the well-being and health status of the animals and providing training for people working with animals. If necessary, experiments can be conducted in the animal facility at biosafety level 1 or 3. Prior to any experiment, approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is required. The facility adheres to Belgian legislation regarding the compulsory training of personnel working with animals (animal caretakers, technicians, and researchers).
